The Amstrad 1000 Series of PCs, launched with the PC1512 in 1986, consisted of:

  • PC1512, an XT-class 8086 machine with 512KB RAM and CGA graphics
  • PC1640, an XT-class 8086 machine with 640KB RAM and EGA graphics
  • PC1286, an AT-class 80286 based machine with 1MB RAM and VGA graphics
  • PC1386, an 80386DX based machine with 1MB RAM and VGA graphics

The systems had two 5 1/4" floppy drives and an option 10 or 20MB hard disk, which was provided as a 'hard card', where the disk and controller were mounted as a unit in a full length expansion slot.

One of the few patents IBM held on the original PC was the keyboard interface. Amstrad, unlike many other clone manufacturers, respected this paatent and hence the systems shipped with a proprietry keyboard interface.
